Did you ever watch Fight Club and have the urge to go to the streets and fight the most random person? Did you ever feel like punching the person who  insulted your favorite sports team? If yes. Football fans who hate the game being called soccer are the people you should meet. Violent fans or more specifically football hooligans indulge in fighting the fans of the other team, after a game of football.

I am writing this blog to tell you that you are the prettiest and the most intelligent English teacher that I have ever had. There are not enough words in the English dictionary to describe how amazing your class is. I have learnt more about English composition in this class, than at any other point in my life; it makes me want to hate all my previous English teachers.

I know I have not been the most diligent student in class and I always walk in late but that is because I admire you so much and am afraid to come to class unprepared. I believe that I may not make the passing grade in this class but I am willing to work harder from now on to make it up. I am a first year engineer and I cannot afford to let this class get in the way of me changing over to my professional school. If I do not pass this class there is a chance that I might lose my scholarship and then I shall have to return to the trailer park, and it is not the life I dreamed about for myself.

At this point I would like to add that my other classmates might not be worth of recieving the pass grade in this class. They always seem to be fooling around and distrubing class during discussions, I am not pointing fingers but just a few weeks ago they seemed to take the persuasive discussion very lightly. The argument was a hypothetical scene where one person had to be voted off for not being important. My group just didnot see the importance of a pregant women over the artist and I was voted out for being too serious. I also feel that topics choosen by the others are too frivolus and they always seem to take papers lightly, they do not take the class as seriously.

I cannot begin to say how much I would love to repeat this class, if I am going to be in your lectures again but the probability of that seems very low. You are an excellent teacher and a wonderful person and that is why I am requesting you to let me pass this class and I shall be grateful to you.

Point: Free trade

My subject is that free trade is needed for globalization and for the better development of the world.

The claim is that free trade in the past has been useful in developing countries.

Evidence is the growth of countries like India and South Korea. The assumption is that free trade is a big step in the way of globalization, but in the end will be good for everyone.

Counterpoint: Fair trade

The subject of the counterpoint is that free trade is not always good and sometimes we need to rules to bind us.

The claim is that some countries make use of their power to overrule the weaker countries.

The evidence being that countries in Africa and Asia feel they are cheated by some countries who use the free trade to their advantage. Also these countries feel the loss of jobs to places outside the country. The assumptions we take into account are that fair trade means it is always fair which is not necessarily the case.

1.One of my favourite movies is the Departed, I personally liked this movie because of the plot and the really good direction that went with the film. The movie had 3 different characters who were on opposite sides of the force and yet their stories were all interlinked. The director Martin Scorsese did a great job with the effects and portrayal of certain objects.

2.Another movie that I really like is Shawshank Redemption. The movie has good theme to it and the actors in the film have done a good job. The slow moving plot has a good background score and good character development. The movie has a very different story than many other films I have watched                                                                                                     3. City of God is a Portuguese film that I watched over the summer. I liked this movie for its uniqueness and for the photography in the movie. The movie is based in Brazil and has some really well shot scenes. The story revolves around three young boys who start gang wars and get killed in the end.

4. Godfather is an all time classic that is a favourite on every list. The movie has a great plot which revolves around the mafia leader. The actors in the movie Al Pacino and Marlon Brando have done a great job and can instill fear in you if you were in the place of some of the people in the movie.

5. Snatch is one of the movies that I can watch over and over again and never get bored. This is a comedy based in England and revolves around some guys trying to steal diamonds. It is an extremely funny movie and I especially liked the pace it moved at. The coincidental things that happen in this movie can never be possible in really life and the unimaginable is always a possibility in this movie. The movie is short and has no unwanted scenes.

Example Summary: The essay by Roger Sipher talks about the abolition of the compulsory attendance laws in primary and secondary schools. Roger Sipher believes that the decline in standardized test scores is because there are students who do not wish to go to school but are forced into it. He makes his argument by stating that those who do not want to learn pollute the class environment and don’t allow the school to enable any disciplinary policies. Public schools are also required to pass these student and their grades would not reflect their aptitude. Public schools could concentrate on educating the students who really want to learn and would save a lot of money if the compulsory attendance laws were removed.

Example Paraphrase:Roger Sipher says that these laws have allowed recalcitrant students to graduate high school without doing any work or learning anything of value.

Example Quotation: Roger Sipher’s believes that “Schools should be for education . At present they are only tangentially so”(Page 3)

There is a lot of different ways in which a photo essay and a movie are portrayed. I personal felt that I can truly understand the author when I see the photo essay. When I read the essay Postcards from the edge, I did get a feel of what the author was trying to portray but the statistics makes it difficult for you to really picture yourself in the authors place. In a narration you can put yourself in the authors shoe although the photo essay capture the real essence because of the background settings and the protagonist.

The photo essay I feel is a very important aspect when talking about a subject like street children. Unlike the movie which actually portrays their real life, the photographs are modified to be in black and white which is precisely what their world seems like. Their life isn’t actually about flowers, rainbows and ponies, the photograph has some of the characters smiling while some of the characters are just doing their own thing.

The movie Streetwise is very different from the essay Postcards from the Edge, the children in the movie, Tiny and Rat, seemed like they had a choice when it came to choosing the streets or the comfort of a home. They had parents who cared for them and they had a home to live in but they seemed to like their profession of being a hooker and a drug dealer. In the movie Tiny talks about how she has had many sexually transmitted diseases and how a lot of her customers treat her badly but at the same time when she meets another girl who is also a hooker she defends her profession and tells her how great it was being on the streets.

There has always been a constant debate between movies and the books they have been made from, I feel that even though the books allow you to put yourself in the authors place, the movie allows you to view the story the way the author wants it. In the case of Streetwise, the movie makes you feel bad for the characters since they are ill-treated and not educated. Even though the children seemed to overact knowing fully well that they were being filmed, the movie still gave us an in-depth analysis into the lives of the street children.

The author of this article Susan Bordo portrays her feelings about the images we see on television. I agree with the author when she says that people try to look like the people they see on television. It is a fast growing fad that seems to overtake a lot of young men and women, I believe that the empire of images even though it is put off as just pictures plays a big role in what we do in every day life. Although we might not admit that we want to imitate  the stars on television, in a lot of ways we aspire to look and be like them. Almost all teenagers today watch a lot of television and most of their decisions are monitored by actions they seen on television.

Eight and nine year old girls who try to be thin and  maintain their body to fit into a size zero dress are harming themselves, eating disorders can cause a lot of problems. I most certainly agree with the author when she says that television stars are always extremely thin and always look much younger than they actually are and emulating them would only mean disaster. Having watched movies on college life like American Pie, I always wondered if college life was actually all fun and games. These movies give you a totally wrong portrayal about college life, even the people in college aren’t like the people you see in the movies. In those movies the actors who are usually way older than their fictional image always look for the super hot girls. By no coincidence the extremely thin and anorexic women are always chosen to play the women that the main actor woos for. Another really good example was the character of Sar Goldfarb who’s life took a U-turn when she started taking the diet pills. She wants to look like the characters on television and thus imagines herself on stage looking thin and beautiful.

I feel that the example of Fiji is an extremely good example as it points out that media images actually influence your lifestyle. A small island which had its own identity lost it to the new fads on television. The author also tries  to tells us that media images are taking away our own identity from us, by giving people make-overs on television. The whole concept of looking like television stars is highly apparent as make-overs and face-lifts make you look like Jessica Alba.

A lot of people may feel that men don’t get affected by the media images, they don’t realize it but a lot of men are also influence by television too. The actors on television are always well built which makes a lot of men want to take protein enchancing drugs to change their body mass index.  It may not be the body complex that is always influenced. It could also be decisions like when choosing between two people who’s right, if television was the judge then it would be the beautiful one, since the bad guy is always portrayed with an eye patch.

When I was growing up, I remember having my grandparents around the house living with us. I always had someone taking care of me, I didn’t have to bother about household chores since my grandparents always did it themselves. It was all good until one day my parents decided that we needed to move and that my grandparents would no longer be living with us. It was a big change for me as it meant more freedom, but also a huge responsibility.

At first it was all fun and games as no one was there to monitor my actions. I had the house at my disposal and I could watch television all day long without being nagged to do my homework. I used to call my friends over to play on the Nintendo and it would last just about till the time my parents came home. It also got me more allowance then before since I didn’t have any one around me all the time. This was only temporary, my grades dropped and I realized that I needed to get my act straightened. This really was good for me as I understood how to do things by myself, I became more responsible. I not only had to take care of my grades, but was also in charge of making sure that the house wasn’t in a mess.

This also helped me transition into college life and being more independent. It became easier for me to move into my residence halls where I had keep my room clean, do my laundry, cook some times and be on good terms with your roomate.

Sometimes I hear my friends complain about being thrown into adulthood their freshmen year of college and I think about how much easier it was for me. Being independent at an early age helped to know my strengths and weaknesses. As a result I can handle my own finances and also understand the value of a lot of things.

My first semester in college made me realize that college was not what I expected it to be, I had been over ambitious and decided to do 18 credits for the semester. I thought college was going to be easy and that was what was made out to me in the first week of school. It was only later that I realized that college was a lot of work and that I could not afford to slack off. I also thought that my first semester in the residence halls would be easy since I would have many friends and also a lot of freedom. I thought that college was going to be great with no one to monitor your actions and you would have complete control of doing what you want.Although this was not the way it was, it was difficult and awkward having a roommate for the first time in my life. I had to get used to the fact that I clean my room up since my roommate would not do it and I also did not have the privacy I needed. The first few weeks were disappointing as all my hopes of how college was going to be were put down. Luckily as the semester progressed things got better and I know like the way college is.
